Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has confirmed that club captain Kyle Walker has expressed a desire to explore opportunities abroad, signaling a potential departure during the January transfer window.
Walker, who was notably absent from City’s 8-0 thrashing of League Two side Salford in the FA Cup third round, reportedly approached City’s director of football, Txiki Begiristain, to discuss his future.
Despite having 18 months left on his contract, the 34-year-old England international is contemplating a move away to conclude his career overseas.
“Two days ago, Kyle asked to explore the options to play abroad,” said Guardiola.
We cannot understand what the club achieved over the years without Kyle. It’s impossible. He’s been our right-back, giving us something we didn’t have. But now, for many reasons, he wants to explore his options for his final years in football.
Walker’s Legacy and Potential Departure
Walker has been a pivotal figure in Manchester City’s recent dominance, including their historic treble-winning campaign in 2023.
However, this isn’t the first time the defender has considered a move.
Guardiola revealed that Walker previously expressed a desire to leave after the 2023 season, with Bayern Munich showing interest at the time. A transfer fell through due to the German club’s inability to meet City’s valuation.
Asked if Walker would be allowed to leave if he reiterated his desire, Guardiola was clear:
Of course. It doesn’t mean it’s going to happen because you never know the situation. But I am pretty convinced that no player who doesn’t want to be here can perform at their best.
City’s Defensive Reinforcements
Manchester City is already preparing for a possible squad overhaul. The club has agreed on a £33.6m deal with French club Lens for Uzbekistan international defender Abdukodir Khusanov.
They are also in talks with Palmeiras for teenage defender Vitor Reis and are monitoring Eintracht Frankfurt forward Omar Marmoush.
Walker’s potential exit comes at a time when Guardiola is seeking to refresh a squad that has struggled to replicate its form from previous seasons.
