Mauricio Pochettino, the head coach of the United States men’s soccer team, has said he will not return to coach Tottenham Hotspur, even though the job is open.

He said it’s “not realistic” for him to come back to the English club right now.

Tottenham recently fired their manager, Ange Postecoglou, even though he helped them win the Europa League — their first trophy in 17 years.

Some fans hoped Pochettino would return, since he was a popular manager at the club from 2014 to 2019.

But Pochettino says he’s happy with his current job leading the U.S. team.

“It’s not realistic. Look where I am,” he told reporters after a game in Connecticut. “I’ve seen the rumors, but I’m focused on my work here.”

Pochettino took over as the U.S. national team coach in October 2024.

His team recently lost 2–1 to Turkey, which was their third loss in a row.

So far, Pochettino has won 5 games and lost 4 in charge of the U.S.

The United States, along with Canada and Mexico, will be hosting the FIFA World Cup in 2026, so there is a lot of pressure on the team to improve before then.

While Pochettino says he’s not returning to Tottenham, the club is now looking for a new coach.

Two possible replacements are Brentford manager Thomas Frank and Fulham coach Marco Silva.
