Mathys Tel is officially a Tottenham player.

Spurs have sealed the permanent signing of the 20-year-old French forward from Bayern Munich in a deal worth £29.8 million, locking him down on a six-year contract that runs until 2031.

The move was always on the cards.

Tel arrived in January on loan under then-boss Ange Postecoglou, and even though the Aussie has since moved on, new manager Thomas Frank gave the green light to make it official.

Tel’s brief stint in north London had its flashes—three goals in 20 appearances—but Spurs clearly see the bigger picture.

They’d already paid £7.3m for the initial loan, with the intention of securing him long-term.

Before Spurs came calling, Tel was on the fringes at Bayern.

After a promising start following his 2022 move from Rennes, the arrival of Vincent Kompany last summer saw his minutes dry up.

By January, he was ready for a change—despite initially rejecting Spurs’ offer before a last-minute U-turn.

Now he’s one of their own.

Tottenham may have finished a dismal 17th last season, but a Europa League final win over Manchester United handed them an unlikely Champions League ticket.

Tel didn’t feature in that final but watched from the bench in Bilbao.

Now, he’s repping France at the U21 Euros in Slovakia and already scored a penalty in their 3-2 win over Georgia.

Spurs beat off January interest from Chelsea, United, and Villa to land him—and Rennes will be quietly celebrating too, thanks to a tidy sell-on clause worth around 10–15%.

Bayern’s Max Eberl was graceful in goodbye: “Mathys Tel came to FC Bayern as a very young player and took his first steps into top-level international football here.

“He was a popular figure in our team, always giving his all for the club and the team. It has become clear that the move to Tottenham was the right one for his development.”
