Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker has shared a heartbreaking message after revealing he could not attend the funeral of his close friend and teammate, Diogo Jota.

Jota and his younger brother, André Silva, were laid to rest in Gondomar, Portugal, on Saturday.

Liverpool players and staff traveled to the funeral, but Alisson remained in Brazil with his family.

In an emotional Instagram post, Alisson wrote:

“Usually, I post things that make sense, but today, nothing makes sense!
Once again, an ocean separates me from saying goodbye to someone I love.”

He added that he feels comforted knowing his Liverpool teammates are representing him at the service.

Alisson also offered support to Jota’s wife, Rute Cardoso, promising:

“You will never walk alone. We will be with you as soon as possible.”

The Brazil international described Jota as a great friend, father, and husband.

The situation brought back memories of 2021 when Alisson also missed his father’s funeral due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, the rest of Liverpool’s squad and staff attended a vigil on Friday night, before arriving at the funeral by 9:30am on Saturday.

Club legends like Jordan Henderson, James Milner, and Thiago were in attendance, alongside Fabinho and Caoimhin Kelleher.

Portugal manager Roberto Martinez and national team players, including Ruben Neves and Joao Cancelo, also paid tribute.

Neves, Jota’s best friend, was one of the pallbearers.

Cancelo and Neves had taken part in a minute’s silence for the brothers during Al Hilal’s Club World Cup match the night before.

Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson led the club’s floral tribute, holding flowers shaped as ‘20’ and ‘30’, symbolizing Jota and André’s squad numbers.

Outside Anfield, hundreds of flowers and heartfelt notes continue to be laid.

A book of remembrance has also been opened at the stadium and online, allowing fans across the globe to pay their respects.
