Arsenal are closing in on the signing of Swedish striker Viktor Gyökeres from Sporting CP in a deal worth around £70 million — a move that could reshape their attack heading into the new season.
Talks between Arsenal and Sporting are moving quickly, and personal terms are already being discussed.
While nothing is signed yet, the Gunners are optimistic about getting the deal done.
Arsenal’s sporting director Andrea Berta is spearheading the negotiations.
This is more than just another transfer rumor — Arsenal have made the 27-year-old forward their top priority as Mikel Arteta looks to add a reliable goal scorer to a team that came agonizingly close to the Premier League title last season.
Gyökeres has been on fire since moving to Portugal, scoring an eye-watering 97 goals in 102 games for Sporting.
His form hasn’t gone unnoticed, and Arsenal believe he could be the difference-maker up front.
They’ve already secured midfielder Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad for £60 million, but Gyökeres would be the marquee signing — the kind of forward fans have been crying out for.
Why Gyökeres?
Let’s be honest — Arsenal have been brilliant under Arteta, but many feel their lack of a clinical striker has held them back.
Gabriel Jesus has battled injuries, and while the likes of Havertz and Nketiah have chipped in, none have consistently led the line.
Gyökeres brings something different: strength, movement, and a real eye for goal.
His numbers in Portugal are incredible, but the big question is — can he do it in the Premier League?
Arteta and the club clearly think he can.
A Look at His Journey
Gyökeres started out in Sweden with IF Brommapojkarna and earned a move to Brighton in 2018.
But like many young players, he struggled to break into the Premier League and spent time on loan at St. Pauli, Swansea, and Coventry.
It was at Coventry City that he really found his feet.
He scored 43 goals in two seasons, helped them reach an FA Cup semi-final and a play-off final, and earned a spot in the Championship Team of the Year.
In 2023, Sporting snapped him up for around £20 million — and he’s gone from strength to strength ever since, leading them to back-to-back league titles and a domestic cup.
What He Could Mean for Arsenal
This isn’t just about bringing in a striker — it’s about making a statement. Arsenal want to win the Premier League.
They’re tired of being second-best. And Gyökeres, with his physicality and nose for goal, could be the missing piece.
