Chelsea fans, buckle up — the summer transfer drama isn’t over just yet.

Fresh off their Club World Cup victory, the Blues are reportedly eyeing another exciting young talent, this time from domestic rivals Manchester City.

According to journalist Simon Phillips, Chelsea have made a fresh enquiry about Nico O’Reilly, the 20-year-old midfielder Pep Guardiola rates highly.

Who is Nico O’Reilly?

O’Reilly is no stranger to City fans.

A product of the club’s academy, he broke into the first team during the 2024/25 season, making 21 appearances and contributing 5 goals and 2 assists.

Though naturally an attacking midfielder, his versatility has seen him fill in across midfield and even at left-back when the team needed cover.

Pep Guardiola has spoken glowingly of the youngster, calling him a huge asset and praising his adaptability and willingness to step up.

“He’s not really a left-back… He’s an attacking midfielder… but he’s helping us a lot. I’m more than grateful,” Pep said earlier this year.

Chelsea’s Interest Isn’t New

This isn’t the first time Chelsea have tried to bring O’Reilly to Stamford Bridge.

A previous attempt during the January transfer window was firmly rejected by City.

Still, the Blues have kept tabs on him ever since — and with their history of signing former City players like Cole Palmer, Romeo Lavia, and Tosin Adarabioyo, a move wouldn’t be out of character.

What Happens Next?

With Liam Delap and Joao Pedro already in the bag, Chelsea’s summer business has been strong.

But the club’s ability to sign more players may hinge on who they can offload.

O’Reilly, while talented, may face competition for minutes depending on where Chelsea plan to use him — especially if he’s not seen as a full-time left-back.
