Chelsea may have just won the Club World Cup, but off the pitch, they’ve got a growing issue — too many players and not enough places to put them.
Under new boss Enzo Maresca, Chelsea have shown they can win big.
Cole Palmer was the star of the tournament, scoring twice in the final and winning Player of the Tournament.

New signing Joao Pedro also scored, while Robert Sanchez – once written off – won the Golden Glove.
Sounds like everything is going great, right? Well, not quite.
Chelsea’s Spending Spree: Now They Need to Sell
Since Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital took over, Chelsea have spent about £1.4 billion on players.
Some have worked out well, but now the squad is overflowing.
To make matters worse:
- UEFA fined Chelsea €20 million for breaking spending rules
- That fine could rise to €80 million if they don’t sell players and cut costs
If they don’t act soon, they won’t be allowed to register new players for the Champions League.
Too Many Players, Not Enough Spots
Chelsea are still signing players — like Joao Pedro, Kendry Paez, Estevao Willian, and others — but the squad is already full.

They’ve started selling:
- Humphreys to Burnley (loan became permanent)
But even with those moves, Chelsea still need to offload more.
The Big Problem: No One Wants Their Deadwood
Chelsea’s toughest task? Getting rid of the players they don’t want, especially those on big wages:
- Raheem Sterling: Loan to Arsenal didn’t work out, and his wages are high
- Ben Chilwell: Palace already signed a new left-back
- Axel Disasi: Could be 8th-choice CB now
- Joao Felix: Bought after a poor loan — could be sold at a loss
- Christopher Nkunku and Armando Broja: May also be moved on
They’re also trying to sell younger signings like:
- Carney Chukwuemeka
- Lesley Ugochukwu
- Possibly even Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall
And with more strikers coming in, players like Datro Fofana and Deivid Washington may never make it to the first team.
Creative Selling, But Not Enough
Chelsea have found clever ways to make room:
- Selling to their sister club Strasbourg
- Offloading homegrown players like Madueke, Chalobah, and others
- Sending younger players on loan — though UEFA only allows 6 foreign loans
Still, it’s not enough.
Chelsea Need a Major Clearout — Fast
Chelsea’s problem is clear: they’ve bought too many players and now have to cut down the squad to stay within financial rules.
If they can’t sell enough players:
