Chelsea Football Club has been named the first-ever official Club World Cup champions by FIFA, following their surprise 3-0 win against Paris Saint-Germain in the final held in New Jersey.
Cole Palmer was the star of the match, scoring two goals and assisting another to help the Blues lift the new-format trophy.
Chelsea not only took home the silverware but also received a generous prize payout.

But this victory did more than just crown a winner—it changed football history.
According to FIFA, all former Club World Cup champions—including Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City, Barcelona, and Real Madrid—will no longer be considered world champions.
Instead, their titles are now called “FIFA Intercontinental Champion” titles.
What’s Changed?
- Old Club World Cup winners like Man City (2023), Liverpool (2019), and Man United (2008) have had their titles rebranded.
- FIFA now officially recognizes Chelsea (2025) as the first ever Club World Cup Champion in this new format.
- The competition used to involve only a few teams (6 to 8), but this year it was expanded to 32 clubs—making it more like the World Cup for national teams.
Chelsea’s Historic Night

Apart from their dominant win, the club received global attention as former U.S. President Donald Trump joined the team on stage to help lift the trophy.
Trump, who was watching the match with his wife Melania and FIFA President Gianni Infantino, even handed goalkeeper Robert Sanchez the Golden Glove award.
He also presented Cole Palmer with the Golden Ball for being the best player of the tournament.
According to a lip-reading expert, Trump told Palmer:
“I’m a big fan of you. Well done.”
Palmer simply replied, “Thank you,” and went back to celebrate with his teammates.
A Surprising Moment on Stage
One of the oddest moments of the night came during the trophy presentation.
While it’s usual for VIPs to step aside after handing out awards, Trump remained on stage, standing next to Chelsea captain Reece James and goalkeeper Sanchez.
Confused by Trump’s continued presence, Palmer was seen whispering, “What’s he doing?”
He later admitted at a press conference:
“I knew he was coming to the game, but I didn’t expect him to be on the podium during the trophy lift. I was a bit confused.”
Infantino was seen trying to politely move Trump aside, but the former President stayed put.
According to lip-reader Jeremy Freeman, Reece James even turned to Trump and asked, “I can lift?” Trump responded, “Oh we can, good!”
Sanchez also asked Trump if he wanted to stand with them during the lift. The goalkeeper reportedly said:

“Please, sir… Want us to lift the trophy next to you?”
Trump agreed, and the trophy celebrations kicked off with him standing proudly on stage.
What This Means for Football
Before this major shift, Real Madrid held the record with five Club World Cup wins, while Barcelona had four.
Chelsea, Bayern Munich, and Corinthians each had two.
Now, only Chelsea’s recent victory is officially recognized as a Club World Cup title under FIFA’s new structure.
FIFA announced the change with a photo captioned:
“The first ever FIFA CWC Champions.”
So, while teams like Liverpool and Man City can still be proud of their past victories, they now fall under a different name in the history books.
