Chelsea have signed Joao Pedro from Brighton in a £60 million deal, just in time for their Club World Cup quarter-final match against Palmeiras.

The Brazilian forward becomes the 18th attacking player Chelsea have brought in under their current owners—and he’s signed an eight-year contract.

Joao Pedro, 23, impressed at Brighton with 30 goals in 70 games since joining from Watford in 2023.

Now, he joins a growing list of young forwards at Stamford Bridge.

His new deal adds to Chelsea’s massive £1.32 billion transfer spending since 2022, including over £560 million just on attackers.

Why Chelsea Want Him

Joao Pedro can play as a striker or a false nine.

He’s known for linking up play, holding the ball, and creating space—skills manager Enzo Maresca values.

With Christopher Nkunku likely to leave and Mykhailo Mudryk provisionally suspended, Chelsea need fresh attacking options.

Brighton coach Fabian Hurzeler said the move was “good for all parties,” highlighting Pedro’s chance to play in the Champions League and aim for Brazil’s World Cup squad.

But Why So Many Forwards?

Chelsea’s attack is packed. They’ve already got Palmer, Jackson, Nkunku, Madueke, and others. Yet they keep adding.

Liam Delap and Jamie Gittens have also joined recently, and Estevao Willian is expected soon.

The reason? Competition. Chelsea want depth across all attacking roles, especially as they return to Champions League football.

Some players may still leave, with offers expected for Jackson or Madueke.

How Can Chelsea Afford It?

Chelsea have spent big, but they’re managing costs by signing young players on long contracts.
