Liverpool have officially confirmed their sixth signing of the summer — and it’s a name few fans would have expected.
Despite recently being crowned Premier League champions, the Reds have shown no signs of slowing down, launching an aggressive summer recruitment campaign under new manager Arne Slot and sporting director Richard Hughes.
Earlier deals saw Giorgi Mamardashvili, Jeremie Frimpong, Armin Pecsi, Florian Wirtz, and Milos Kerkez all join the Anfield side.

Now, Freddie Woodman, the 28-year-old Preston North End goalkeeper, has joined Liverpool on a free transfer, adding depth and experience to their goalkeeping unit.
Woodman Deal Confirmed by the Club
In a statement released on their official website, Liverpool announced:
“Liverpool are set to sign Freddie Woodman on a free transfer.
“The 28-year-old has agreed a contract with the Reds to bolster the goalkeeping ranks upon the expiry of his previous deal with Preston North End.”
Woodman had been a regular starter for Preston in the Championship, making a total of 278 senior club appearances throughout his career.
With his contract set to expire, Liverpool wasted no time in snapping up the former England youth international.
Overhaul in the Goalkeeping Department
Woodman’s arrival completes a major reshuffle in Liverpool’s goalkeeping lineup:
- Caoimhin Kelleher has moved to Brentford.
- Vitezslav Jaros has joined Ajax on loan.
- Harvey Davies has been loaned to Crawley Town.
- Giorgi Mamardashvili will serve as Alisson’s new No. 2.
Though 20-year-old Armin Pecsi, signed earlier this month, seemed like a potential third-choice keeper, the club opted for experience.
With over a decade of senior football and stints at clubs like Swansea and Preston, Woodman offers a solid, reliable backup option.
Homegrown Advantage
Another key benefit of signing Woodman? He qualifies as a homegrown player under UEFA rules.
As The Times’ Paul Joyce explains:
“Importantly, Woodman meets the criteria for an association trained player, which is three years playing for a club in England between 15 and 21 years of age.
“He therefore does not need to take one of Liverpool’s 17 non-homegrown slots on the UEFA squad list.”
What’s Next for Liverpool?
While this may wrap up business in the goalkeeping department, Liverpool’s summer activity is far from over.
The club remains in talks to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace to reinforce their central defence.
