Liverpool Football Club has started early talks with Bayer Leverkusen about signing one of their top players, Florian Wirtz.
Wirtz is a 22-year-old attacking midfielder from Germany who has been having a great season.
He has already scored 16 goals in all competitions.
Wirtz is becoming a key transfer target for Arne Slot, who is Liverpool’s new manager.
Even though the current season has not ended, Liverpool is already planning ahead to make the team stronger for next year.
Talks Also Involve Another Player
As part of their conversations with Leverkusen, Liverpool is also close to signing Jeremie Frimpong, another talented player from the German club.
During those discussions, Liverpool let Leverkusen know they are very interested in Wirtz as well.
So far, no official offers or formal negotiations have started. But Liverpool is expected to move forward soon.
Bayer Leverkusen values Wirtz at more than £120 million.
That would be even more than the £107 million Chelsea paid for Enzo Fernandez in 2023, which is currently the most expensive transfer in British football history.
Will Liverpool Pay the High Price?
It’s not clear yet if Liverpool is willing to pay such a big fee.
However, the club has gotten signs that Wirtz would prefer to join Liverpool rather than Bayern Munich, who are also interested in him.
This could give Liverpool an advantage in the race to sign the talented midfielder.
What the Coach Says
Liverpool’s manager, Arne Slot, said the team plans to be smart with their signings this summer. He told the BBC:
“There aren’t many players who can improve our squad, but for the ones who can, we will try to sign them.”
He added that it’s not certain yet if deals like this are possible, but the club will try.
Earlier this week, reports said that Manchester City is no longer trying to sign Wirtz.
That leaves Liverpool and Bayern Munich as the main two clubs interested in the player.
