The football world is in mourning after the sudden death of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, 28, and his younger brother Andre Silva, 26.

The two were killed early Thursday morning in a car crash in northern Spain.

Jota and Andre were reportedly driving a Lamborghini Urus SUV when a tyre burst while overtaking another car near Zamora, close to the Portugal border.

The vehicle went off the road, rolled, and caught fire. Emergency responders arrived quickly but were unable to save them.

Why Was Jota Travelling by Road?

Reports from Portugal say Jota had recent lung surgery and was advised not to fly.

Instead, he and Andre planned to catch a ferry from Santander to the UK as Liverpool’s pre-season training begins next week.

The brothers were on their way to Liverpool—less than two weeks after Jota married his childhood sweetheart Rute Cardoso in Porto on June 22.
