Selling Madueke helps Chelsea meet financial fair play requirements.

Arsenal are on the verge of completing a major summer transfer by signing Chelsea winger Noni Madueke for a total of £52 million.
The move will see the Gunners pay £48 million upfront, with £4 million in add-ons.
The 23-year-old England international has been released from Chelsea’s Club World Cup camp in the U.S. to travel and finalize his medical with Arsenal.
Madueke had a solid 2024/25 season, making 45 appearances, scoring 11 goals, and providing five assists.
Despite being used primarily on the right wing (33 appearances), Arsenal are reportedly looking to strengthen their left side of attack—an area where Madueke has struggled to deliver consistent performances.
Chelsea’s Summer Rebuild
Chelsea originally signed Madueke from PSV Eindhoven for £29 million in January 2023.
Though his contract runs until 2030, the West London club is now focused on reshaping their attacking options.
So far, they’ve brought in:
- Liam Delap from Ipswich for £30m
- Joao Pedro from Brighton for £60m
- Jamie Gittens from Dortmund for £48.5m + £3.5m in add-ons
With such high spending, Chelsea need to balance their finances, especially due to UEFA’s Champions League squad registration rules.
Selling Madueke helps them meet financial fair play requirements.
Arsenal’s Transfer Strategy
Arsenal have been eyeing several wide players this summer.
While Madueke looks set to arrive, they were also interested in Rodrygo from Real Madrid.
The Brazilian star, however, is valued at £69m (€80m) and his future remains uncertain under new Real boss Xabi Alonso.
Rodrygo, known for his success in the Champions League, prefers playing on the left wing, which better aligns with Arsenal’s needs.
But with Bukayo Saka and young talent Ethan Nwaneri already covering the right flank, Madueke’s role might stir debate among fans—especially since he didn’t record a goal or assist in his seven appearances on the left last season.
Expert Opinions: Is Madueke the Right Fit?
Sam Blitz from Sky Sports points out that Madueke’s arrival could divide opinions.
While he adds depth on the wings, some fans hoped for bigger names like Rodrygo or Nico Williams.
However, it’s notable that in Madueke’s last nine games, most were played on the left wing, including an England match against Andorra where he provided the match-winning assist.
Despite this, his natural comfort zone remains the right side, where he’s more effective and confident.
Chelsea’s Financial Considerations
According to Sky Sports News’ Kaveh Solhekol, Chelsea’s motivation to sell is driven by the need to meet financial fair play regulations after a busy transfer window.
The Blues have spent heavily, and UEFA’s new rule means their spending must be balanced by sales.
