Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has confirmed that Filip Jorgensen is now the club’s first-choice goalkeeper, replacing Robert Sanchez.

The decision comes after Sanchez faced criticism following a string of errors that cost Chelsea crucial points in recent matches.

Maresca, who took over at Chelsea this season, had initially backed Sanchez as his main shot-stopper.

However, as the Spanish international struggled with consistency, Maresca felt it was time for a change.

Jorgensen, who had previously played a backup role, will now take over in goal, starting with Chelsea’s upcoming Premier League clash against Brighton.

Maresca’s Explanation

Addressing the media, Maresca explained his reasoning behind the switch:

“I said that the Filip solution was also to give Robert some time to recover mentally and physically,” he stated. “But the idea is not to change the keeper game by game. In the last Premier League game, we had Filip, and in the FA Cup, it was Robert. Our keeper at the moment is Filip.”

The Chelsea boss also revealed that he had an honest conversation with Sanchez before making the decision.

“I spoke with Robert a few days before the West Ham game, where I took the decision to play Filip. I haven’t spoken again with Robert, and it’s the same with Filip. They both know the situation. This is how things stand for now, and we will see how it goes.”

Chelsea’s Season So Far

Chelsea currently sit in fourth place in the Premier League table with 43 points from 24 games.

While the team remains in contention for a top-four finish and Champions League qualification, defensive lapses have been a major concern throughout the season.

Maresca hopes that Jorgensen’s introduction will bring stability to the backline as Chelsea prepares for a crucial run of fixtures. The young goalkeeper will have a big test ahead as he takes on Brighton, a side known for their attacking intensity.

With the competition for the No.1 spot heating up, all eyes will be on Jorgensen to see if he can solidify his place in Chelsea’s starting lineup.
