Mohamed Salah is reportedly “very close” to signing a new contract with Liverpool, securing his future at Anfield despite ongoing links to the Saudi Pro League.
The Egyptian forward is enjoying a record-breaking season at 32, leading Liverpool to the top of the Premier League table with 25 goals and 16 assists.
His performances have put him in contention for the 2025 Ballon d’Or, making this one of the most dominant individual campaigns in modern English football history.
Contract Talks Gaining Momentum
Despite earlier uncertainty surrounding his contract situation—his current deal expires in June—Fichajes now reports that negotiations with Liverpool have progressed positively.
The club has been working tirelessly to prevent Salah from leaving as a free agent, aware of the lucrative offers that could come from Saudi Arabia.
This latest development contrasts with Salah’s previous comments, where he downplayed any progress in contract discussions.
“It’s my last year at the club and I want to do something special for the city,” Salah told Sky Sports on January 3. “It’s the last six months. There is no progress [on contract talks]. We are far away from any progress, so we just have to wait and see.”
With weeks passing since that statement, it appears the situation has shifted, and Liverpool are now edging closer to securing their talisman’s future.
Using Uncertainty as Motivation
Sky Sports pundit Roy Keane has suggested that Salah’s contract uncertainty may have been a key factor in his outstanding form this season.
“What might have helped him as well is that his contract was up,” Keane said. “Sometimes you find a bit of motivation from that. He’s thinking obviously: ‘I’m playing for a better deal, if I’m going abroad.’
“I know some people say it’s a distraction, but he’s used it in a really positive way. In his interviews, he’s talking well. But contract situations can get a player down. It can affect their pride or their ego. But he’s used that as a bit of energy, and I think that’s helped him and almost motivated him a bit more.”
Saudi Threat Still Looms
Until the new contract is officially signed, Liverpool remain wary of Saudi Pro League interest.
