Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has offered a glimmer of hope to fans eager to see him extend his stay at Anfield, confirming that there has been “progress” in discussions.
The 33-year-old centre-back is in the final year of his current deal, set to expire at the end of the season.
His future, along with that of star teammates Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold, has been the subject of speculation as all three players approach the final stretch of their contracts.
Just last month, Van Dijk admitted he was uncertain about his future at the club.
However, following Liverpool’s dramatic 3-2 defeat at Fulham on Sunday, the Dutch international struck a more optimistic tone when speaking to the media.
“There is progress, yeah,” Van Dijk revealed. “I don’t know [if I’ll stay], we’ll see. These are internal discussions. But I love the club, I love the fans—they were there for us again and we wanted to reward them.”
Despite the disappointment in west London, where Liverpool suffered only their second league loss of the season.
The Reds remain in a commanding position with an 11-point lead at the top of the Premier League table.
Van Dijk, ever the leader, acknowledged the team’s shortcomings against Fulham.
“It was a poor day at the office for all of us. There were individual moments that should have been dealt with better. It was not acceptable as a team.”
Since arriving at Liverpool from Southampton in 2018 for £75 million—a then-record fee for a defender—Van Dijk has been a cornerstone of Jürgen Klopp’s success.
He’s made 323 appearances for the club, scoring 26 goals and playing a pivotal role in delivering the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, and two EFL Cup titles.
