Virgil van Dijk has signed a new contract with Liverpool FC, extending his stay at Anfield beyond the 2024-25 season, the club confirmed on Thursday.

The Dutch centre-back, who has captained the team since the summer of 2023, penned the fresh deal nearly seven and a half years after his arrival from Southampton in January 2018.

The announcement follows shortly after Mohamed Salah also agreed to new terms, signaling Liverpool’s intent to retain its key leaders as the squad evolves.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Van Dijk expressed his pride and emotion over the extension.

“There are so many emotions obviously that go through my head right now,” he said. “It’s a proud feeling, it’s a feeling of joy. It’s just incredible… to be able to extend it with another two years at this club is amazing.”

The 33-year-old was emphatic in his commitment to Liverpool, reiterating that continuing his career at the club was always the goal.

“It was always Liverpool. There wasn’t any doubt in my head that this is the place to be for me and my family,” he added. “I’m one of Liverpool. Someone called me the other day an adopted Scouser – I’m really proud to hear these things.”

Van Dijk has been a cornerstone of Liverpool’s success since his record-breaking transfer, playing a central role in a golden era that has seen the club win the Premier League, Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, and two Carabao Cups.

He has made 314 appearances and scored 27 goals in all competitions for the Reds to date.

Individually, Van Dijk’s accolades include the 2019 PFA Players’ Player of the Year and four appearances in the PFA Team of the Year.

He also famously finished second in the 2019 Ballon d’Or voting, narrowly behind Lionel Messi – a rare feat for a defender in the modern era.
