Liverpool’s unbeaten run has finally come to an end, but with their dominant position in the Premier League, their title triumph seems almost inevitable.

Arne Slot’s side suffered their first defeat in 26 league matches at Fulham, a setback that marks only their second loss of the season.

However, with seven games remaining, Liverpool require just 11 more points to secure the Premier League title, and barring any extraordinary collapse, they are on track to be crowned champions.

The Setback at Fulham

Liverpool’s loss at Craven Cottage was disappointing, but head coach Arne Slot remains optimistic.

He acknowledged that all three goals they conceded could have been prevented, which deviated from the standards the team has set this season.

“That is not what we usually see and that is probably why we are where we are, because if you make these mistakes more often in this league, you would not have the amount of points we have,” Slot reflected.

Despite the loss, he’s confident that the team will bounce back quickly.

“The second half is much more like the team we are,” he added.

Slot’s side has shown resilience throughout the campaign, and even after this setback, the title remains firmly in their grasp.

A Historic Finish in Sight

Liverpool now lead second-place Arsenal by 11 points, and with just seven games left, the Reds are poised to secure their 20th top-flight title.

In fact, they could wrap up the title as early as 20 April, depending on other results.

No team in Premier League history has ever squandered such a significant lead this late in the season.

Slot’s men have been consistent throughout, even if their closest rivals have been underperforming.

The Critics and Accusations

Despite Liverpool’s strong season, rival fans have questioned the quality of the team and the league this year.

Critics have argued that Liverpool’s 2024-25 side might not have won the title in previous seasons. But this year, Liverpool’s rivals have faltered.

Defending champions Manchester City are struggling, Manchester United are enduring their worst-ever Premier League campaign, and Arsenal, last season’s runners-up, are well behind their previous points tally.

Gary Neville, the former Manchester United captain, pointed out the struggles of other top teams:

“The other teams just haven’t stepped up this season, and Liverpool have been consistent all the way through.”

Liverpool have made the most of the situation. Even if Arsenal were on track to match their points from last season, Liverpool would still be ahead by two points, proving that their efficiency, rather than flair, has been the key to success.

“I don’t even think Liverpool have been outstanding this season, they’ve been efficient,” said former Manchester City defender Micah Richards.

Record Points and Title Push

In the Premier League, only 14 teams in its 32-season history have reached 90 points or more in a season, and Liverpool is on course to join this elite group.

To break Arsenal’s 2004 record of 90 points, Liverpool need 18 points from their remaining seven games.

This would also place them among the top league-winning sides in history, as only 12 of the previous 31 champions have achieved this feat.

With their closest challengers faltering, Slot’s team will be determined to finish the season strong.
