Liverpool have made their first move in a summer pursuit of a highly rated attacking midfielder widely considered among the best in his position.

With a new era on the horizon under incoming head coach Arne Slot, the club has begun laying the groundwork for what could be one of the transfer window’s standout deals.

According to journalist Duncan Castles, the Reds have “asked questions” about Xavi Simons, the Dutch international rising star currently starring for RB Leipzig.

The 21-year-old playmaker, who permanently joined the Bundesliga side from PSG earlier this year, is now at the center of growing transfer speculation — and Liverpool are firmly among the clubs keeping close tabs.

While the player has endured an injury-hit campaign, missing two months due to an ankle issue, his form when fit has turned heads.

The 21-year-old — widely regarded as “one of the best 10s in the world” — has featured 29 times for Leipzig this season, contributing 10 goals and six assists.

Speaking on The Transfers Podcast, Castles said, “I’m also told that Liverpool have asked questions about the player [Simons], and again, you look at the style of his play, and you could see why he would be a fit to the way Liverpool play.

So top-level clubs, at least in terms of budget, I don’t think we can call Manchester United a top-level club in terms of performance anymore, and again, summer after summer, Simons is the focus.

But I think everything is set up for a sale this summer, if they can convince one of those clubs to come in and spend the money that Leipzig want for him.”

The midfielder, is also being tracked by Manchester United, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City.

Under contract until 2027 and earning around £165,000 per week, Simons is one of Leipzig’s top earners and most valuable assets — but may not be staying for long.

For Liverpool, the move signals intent. With creative reinforcements needed and several midfield uncertainties to address, Simons represents a marquee opportunity.

While no formal offer has been submitted yet, the groundwork is being laid for what could be a blockbuster signing.
