Sometimes football is about more than just goals and trophies — it’s about people, memories, and the love we share.

That’s why Liverpool Football Club has made an emotional decision: they’re retiring Diogo Jota’s number 20 shirt — forever.

It’s the first time in Liverpool’s long 133-year history that they’ve ever done this for a player.

And it’s not just for the men’s team. No one across the club — from the women’s side to the youth teams — will ever wear the number 20 again.

Remembering Diogo and His Brother

This heartfelt gesture comes after the tragic death of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who both died in a car accident in Spain on July 3.

The news shook fans around the world, especially those who had come to love Jota’s energy, passion, and smile.

Before making the decision, the club spoke with Jota’s wife, Rute, and other close family members.

They wanted to make sure this tribute felt right — and came from the heart.

“He’ll Always Be Our Number 20”

In a beautiful statement, Liverpool CEO Michael Edwards put it perfectly:

“This is about more than football. Diogo wasn’t just a talented player — he was a wonderful human being. He gave everything for this club. He wore number 20 with pride, and now, we’re making it eternal.”

“He joined us in 2020, and in many ways, he won us number 20. As far as Liverpool is concerned, Diogo will always be our number 20.”

A Special Tribute on Matchday

To honour Diogo and Andre, Liverpool will hold a special tribute before their match against Preston on Sunday:

  • Fans will sing ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ with full hearts
  • A minute’s silence will be held at the stadium
  • Digital tributes will light up the big screen and pitchside boards
  • Both teams will wear black armbands
  • Preston will lay a wreath near the away fans as a mark of respect

And the matchday programme will be filled with messages and memories of the two brothers

This moment isn’t just about remembering Diogo Jota the player — it’s about honouring Diogo Jota the person.

His talent brought joy to so many, but it’s his kindness, warmth, and spirit that will stay in our hearts forever.

As Liverpool put it so beautifully:

“By retiring his number, we’re making it eternal — so he’ll never be forgotten.”

And truly, he never will be.
