Liverpool strengthened their grip on the Premier League title race with a dominant 2-0 victory over Newcastle United at Anfield.
Goals from Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister ensured Arne Slot’s side took full advantage of Arsenal’s slip-up, extending their lead at the summit to 13 points.
A Crucial Win in the Title Race
With Arsenal dropping points in a goalless draw against Nottingham Forest, Liverpool had the perfect opportunity to increase their lead—and they didn’t disappoint.
Despite Slot’s absence from the touchline due to a two-game ban, Liverpool played with their trademark intensity.

Szoboszlai struck first in the 11th minute, capitalizing on a well-timed pass from Luis Díaz. His scuffed shot wrong-footed Nick Pope, giving Liverpool an early lead.
Newcastle struggled to find a response, and their challenge became even tougher when Mac Allister doubled the lead in the second half.
The Argentine finished off a brilliant move initiated by Mohamed Salah, curling a precise shot into the top corner.
By the final whistle, chants of “We’re going to win the league” echoed across Anfield as Liverpool fans began to believe their 20th English league title was within reach.
Newcastle’s Attacking Struggles
Eddie Howe’s side entered the game missing their top scorer, Alexander Isak, due to a groin injury. In his absence, Callum Wilson led the line, making his first Premier League start of the season.
However, Newcastle lacked cutting edge in attack, failing to register a single shot on target.
Wilson had two golden opportunities but failed to convert. His first attempt, a one-on-one against Alisson, ended with a chipped effort sailing wide—though he was spared embarrassment by the offside flag.
Moments later, he wasted another clear-cut chance, further highlighting Newcastle’s struggles in front of goal.
Newcastle remain sixth in the table, three points behind Manchester City in fourth. With Champions League qualification still within reach, Howe’s side will need to improve their form in the final stretch of the season.
Liverpool’s Midfield Dominance
Liverpool’s victory was built on a midfield masterclass, with Szoboszlai and Mac Allister excelling.
The Hungarian international not only scored but also put in a tireless display, winning the most tackles among all Liverpool players.
Meanwhile, Mac Allister’s ability to dictate the tempo and link up with Salah showcased why he has become a key figure in Slot’s system.
His goal, which capped off a slick passing move, was a testament to Liverpool’s fluid attacking play.
Salah, though unable to find the net, registered his 42nd goal involvement of the season, proving once again why he remains one of the league’s most influential players.
What’s Next?
Liverpool’s title charge continues, with just 10 games left to play. With six of those fixtures at Anfield, the Reds are edging closer to securing another historic league triumph.
For Newcastle, their focus now shifts to the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool on March 16—an opportunity for redemption and a chance to secure silverware this season.
